Where to Exchange Money in Florence

03 July 2013 - Exchange money in Florence

Change – Exchange – Wechsel

If you are in town and need to exchange money in Florence, banks and most exchange locations will charge you crazy fees for each transaction. I always suggest this exchange place…okay, from the photo it seems a bit dodgy and yes, it is literally a hole in the wall – but, with no extra fees this is really one of the best rates to exchange your money in Florence.

  1. Guy is still there. Best rates in Italy. Was easy process. Rate was .89 euro to 1 usd. He gave us .84. Everywhere else was .7 or lower. One place in Florence said .53 what else do you expect.

    1. No way Kevin, they quoted you .53! I can’t say I’m all too shocked. I’ve seen exchange places where they have those electronic screens with the rates digitally going by (especially at the airports)… they try to seem enticing and legit, but they usually have the worse rates! Enjoy Florence!

  2. This place is still there and a great deal. Today the official rate was 84, and I got 79 with no other service charge. AND, 2 blocks down is All’antico Vinaio, the best sandwich in town.

      1. Another update! The place is still there and still a great deal. Today the official rate was 88 and I got 84 with no other service charge. Great to have this info while we were here! Ciao!

  3. I went there to exchange chinese dollars to euros.

Yes, there is no commission fee. But the guy there give me an exchange rate about 7 % higher than the rate on the XE.com website, which is maybe better than other places in Florence but still not that good. I guess that it is probably better to just exchange at ATM in that case.

Besides, the guy working there was not smiling, which is ok. But he was also quite rude. He asked for my passport. But I told him that forgot it at the hotel and would come back. Then he started to look pissed off and told me something like “why do you travel to another country without your passport? you should not do that? have you ever travelled to another country”. I mean, he is not my father or whatever to tell me what I should do or judge why I don’t have my passport. Anyway, I still exchanged the money by showing him a scan of my password. But I will not come back. That guy does not know about providing good customer service. And the rate was still quite high so next time, I go to ATM.

    1. Ciao Philippio! Thanks for writing about your experience here. My friends and family have only ever exchanged US dollars to Euro, so the exchange for other countries may definitely be different. Also, Italy is not known for customer service!! Sorry you had to learn it the hard way, even after 10 years in Florence, there are moments where I miss the American customer service with a smile mentality haha. I truly hope you still had a great time in Italy!
